Why are we called Maayu?

Maayu is built from two words: Maa and you.

Maa. Mama. Mum. It is one of the first word most of us ever say. The first sound that meant safety and comfort. Across every language, every culture, every continent, it means the same thing. Unconditional care and love.

Motherhood is the original standard of care. That is the quality Maayu holds itself to. In every fabric choice, every natural dye, every stitch. We are a female-founded business, built by a mother who wanted to do things differently.

The Origin Story of Maayu

It all started with a PCOD diagnosis

The seeds for Maayu were sown when our founder Sonal found out that her teenage daughter Mahi was on the onset of PCOD. When the gynecologist confirmed it was a common problem faced by young girls and women today, Sonal started looking for answers. That search became Maayu.

Sonal had spent years working to remove toxins from the clothing and fashion industry. She knew exactly which chemicals were used in textile manufacturing, and the harm they caused to human health and to the planet. When her attention turned to underwear, what she found was hard to ignore.

Synthetic fabrics everywhere. Spandex sold often as a feature. Chemical dyes in direct contact with the most sensitive skin on the body, every single day.

She asked a question the industry was not asking. What if intimate-wear was actually clean?

At Maayu, we took up that challenge. No spandex. No polyester. No chemical dyes. We are here to make intimate-wear that is truly breathable, truly safe, and truly good for you.

Zero chemical dyes. Zero synthetic fibre. Zero spandex. 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. All our panties are made from certified organic cotton and are unbleached. Our undergarments are dyed with madder root, indigo, pomegranate peel and turmeric.

Our boxers are handwoven using indigenous organic cotton. Every Maayu product is designed specifically for wellbeing, using minimal resources and made such that it asks nothing from your body.

We kept cotton in its purest form possible. No bleach, no synthetic dye, no synthetics. The healthiest choice for your body and for the planet.
