Why Choose Maayu Underwear for Kids

We designed children's undergarments with developing bodies in mind

Growing bodies absorb more than adult bodies

Children's bodies are doing extraordinary work. Growing, moving, building immunity. The conditions around that work matter - what they eat, how they sleep, what they breathe, and yes, what clothes they wear all day long.

A child's skin is still developing its outer protective layer, it is 20 to 30% thinner than adult skin, more absorbent, and quicker to react. What presses against it all day, the fabric, the dyes, the elastic, gets absorbed more easily than it ever would on you. Most conventional kids' underwear is made with synthetic dyes, pesticide-treated cotton, and chemical elastic. During play, when the body heats up and sweats, absorption only increases. Underwear worn through hours of running, climbing, and rest is worth thinking about in the same way you think about everything else you choose for them.

Maayu makes children's undergarments from 100% organic cotton, no synthetic chemicals. Dyed with natural herbs like indigo and madder root.

For the Planet

For the Planet

Each pair saves 1,660 litres of water and 189 grams of CO₂. No microplastics released with every wash. No synthetic chemicals entering the water system. Where we use colour, it comes only from natural plant dyes. Packaged in reused and compostable materials. We try and make as close to zero waste as possible.

For The People Behind It

For The People Behind It

Every pair is made at a fair trade certified factory. Where we use colour, it comes only from natural plant dyes. We are a female founded and run business. Built from a small village in Goa, we employ local women, we compost, plants trees, and believes a business should leave things better than it found them.

FAQs

  • Most underwear sits against a child's most sensitive skin for 12 or more hours a day. Regular kids' underwear is made with bleach, synthetic dyes and pesticide-treated cotton — and a child's skin is 20 to 30% thinner than adult skin, which means it absorbs what touches it more readily. Research links these chemicals to skin irritation, rashes, and disruption to healthy development over time. 100% organic cotton has none of these. It breathes, it's chemical-free, and it works with a growing body rather than against it.

  • It means the cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or GMO seeds. But that is just the farm.

Once the cotton leaves the field, most brands hand it to conventional textile processing. It gets bleached white. It gets dyed with synthetic chemicals. It gets blended with spandex. By the time it becomes underwear, the organic origin is almost irrelevant — but the label still says organic. Most parents never know to ask what happened in between.

Certifications for organic fabric still permit the use of synthetic dyes and chemical processing after harvesting. A garment can carry that label and still be bleached and dyed with chemicals that make direct contact with your child's skin.

At Maayu we go further. Our fabric is unbleached. It stays the colour it naturally grows. Where we use colour, it comes only from plants: indigo, madder root, harda, and pomegranate peels. No synthetic dyes. No bleach. Nothing synthetic touches the fabric from the field to the finished pair.

A certification tells you where the cotton started. We're telling you everything that didn't happen to it after.

  • Spandex, also sold as Lycra, is used widely in kids' clothing including underwear. It is a petroleum-based synthetic fibre and a known endocrine disruptor. Most parents don't know it's there because nobody puts it on the front of the packet.

Most kids' underwear is also coloured with synthetic dyes, the most common of which are azo dyes, which can release harmful compounds against skin. And before dyeing, the fabric is bleached white with chemicals that don't fully wash out.

At Maayu we simply don't use any of these. Our kids' underwear is 100% organic cotton with no spandex, no synthetic dyes, and no chemical bleach. Where we use colour, it comes only from plants like indigo and madder root. Nothing their body has to work around.

  • Maayu doesn't treat or cure eczema and we will never claim it does. What we do know is that synthetic dyes, chemical bleach, and spandex are common contact irritants, and for children with sensitive or eczema-prone skin, removing them from the equation is a reasonable and well-supported first step.

Children's skin reacts faster and more intensely than adult skin. Fabric that sits against it for 8 or more hours a day is worth getting right. Organic cotton breathes naturally, regulates moisture, and carries none of the chemical residues found in conventional underwear. Dermatologists have recommended the switch to chemical-free organic cotton for sensitive skin for a long time. It is not a new idea.

Many parents of children with eczema tell us that softer, cleaner fabric makes a noticeable difference to their child's comfort. We think that's worth something, even if it isn't a cure.

  • If your child is between sizes, we generally recommend sizing up for comfort and room to grow.

If you are trying Maayu for the first time, we recommend starting with a single pair before committing to a pack. Most parents don't go back once they have made the switch.

Use our kids' size guide as your starting point.
